Happy Fourth of July week, everyone!
It is officially that time of year in Michigan where we celebrate freedom, family, fireworks, and apparently sweating the second we step outside. This week is bringing some serious heat across Michigan, with heat indexes expected to climb into the 100s in parts of the state, so make sure you are staying cool, drinking plenty of water, checking on your people, and maybe saving the heavy yard work for early morning or later in the evening.
For our family, this past weekend was extra special. Abby and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary, and we also got to celebrate Abby’s 29th birthday! Four years of marriage, three kids, a whole lot of real estate, plenty of projects, and somehow she still puts up with me. That alone deserves a celebration.
For her birthday, I decided to build her a new gazebo. Some people buy flowers. Some people buy jewelry. I apparently build outdoor structures in the middle of summer heat. Romantic, right?
In all seriousness, it turned out great, and it has already made our outdoor space feel more usable, more inviting, and more complete. It gives us a place to sit, relax, watch the kids play, and enjoy summer evenings without feeling like we are baking in the sun.
As a real estate guy, I also cannot help but look at projects like this through the lens of home value. Outdoor living spaces have become a big deal for buyers. A nice patio, gazebo, covered sitting area, or backyard hangout spot can make a home feel larger, more functional, and more enjoyable. While every home and market is different, thoughtful outdoor improvements can absolutely add appeal and may help increase equity when done well.
The key is making sure the project looks intentional, fits the home, and feels like an extension of the living space instead of an afterthought. A gazebo, patio, landscaping, fire pit area, or covered seating space can help buyers picture themselves actually living there, not just walking through the house.
